Welcome to “Eight in the Octagon”, a Cambridge University 800th Anniversary exhibition of still-life paintings by artist Julie Daniels that was held from 18th October to 6th November 2009 at Clare College, Cambridge. The eight paintings (one for each hundred years of the University’s history) represent books, objects and scientific instruments photographed at college libraries, the UL and the Whipple Museum, and bear the coats-of-arms of the colleges founded in each historical period.

The paintings include University treasures such as Lady Margaret Beaufort’s Book of Hours, Newton’s walking stick and own annotated edition of the Principia, Darwin’s microscope, Wordsworth’s breakfast teacup and speech notes by Churchill. Each painting shows a number of beautiful and interesting items from each historical period, with frames bearing a gilded Cambridge University coat-of-arms with the dates of the 800th Anniversary.
